Nepal Trekking: what to look for

There are literally hundreds of companies offering Nepal trekking expeditions. Everest Base Camp treks, Everest Circuit and Annapurna Circuit treks. Short Everest treks and remote trekking adventures in the Upper Mustang region to name just a few. When searching for a reputable Nepal trekking tour operator, you must ensure they provide the following:

A gradual and safe acclimatisation schedule is paramount. Avoid any company promising you an   Everest Base Camp trek (Lukla to Lukla) in less than 13 days. Why? Although this itinerary could be achieved safely (just), an itinerary of this duration doesn’t provide any spare days to allow for illness, bad weather or any other unforeseen circumstances. We recommend a minimum of 15 days Lukla to Lukla for any Everest Base Camp Nepal trekking expedition.

All meals (and boiled water) while trekking MUST be included in any trip package you purchase. There are plenty of operators out there selling Nepal trekking trips that don’t include meals. While this makes their price look attractive, these operators must be avoided at all costs. Why? A crucial part of any safe and responsible acclimatisation schedule includes plenty of food and hydration. From a safety point of view, this is too important a component of any trekking expedition to be left to the client. Some operators will even suggest a budget for food which is usually way under what the real cost would be.

When trekking at altitude (and especially at high altitude), people need to be eating good meals regularly. Lots of food all the time.  Trekking leaders and guides need to be encouraging their clients to be eating plenty of food at each meal break, and to be drinking lots too. Nepal trekking companies that aren’t providing meals and an “all you can eat” policy are neglecting a significant responsibility. Proper food and hydration plays a major role in avoiding altitude illness and this is not a consideration that should be left to the client.

A Nepal trekking MUST

Can you be confident your trekking leaders and guides are well trained for their roles? Sounds pretty simple but this is another important question you need to be asking. Is your Nepal trekking guide properly qualified to guide and lead trekking expeditions in the Nepal Himalaya? Does he or she have the necessary first aid qualifications? Will your Nepal trekking guide be able to recognise symptoms of altitude illness and act accordingly? Do your kitchen staff have the necessary qualifications in food preparation and hygiene?

And don’t forget this one… How well does your chosen Nepal trekking company actually know the trekking and climbing guides/trip leaders they employ? Do they know their full names, their history, their families? Do they help to train and educate them? Do they provide them with the proper support. clothing and equipment to fulfil their roles?

As you can see, there are a host of things you need to be looking for (asking about) to make sure the company you are choosing is not only reputable, but also professional and safe. Read our #noshortcuts post for more important information on what you need to look for.
