Also known as the Annapurna Introductory Trek, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is a great trek to consider if this is your first trip to Nepal. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek can be completed safely in a week so it also represents a good option for those with limited time.

There are a number of ways an Annapurna Sanctuary Trek can be completed and the map below shows the traditional way of undertaking this trip (visit our trip page for a larger version of this map). Depending on how much time you have, there are a number of different routes you can explore and add to the below itinerary. Most people trek in an anti-clockwise direction from Pokhara and will spend nights at Australian Camp, Landruk and Chomrong. From Chomrong many people elect to continue north to South Annapurna Base Camp. This is a popular destination that also passes through Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3700m).

A gentle trek from start to finish

If you do elect to trek all the way into South Annapurna Base Camp you will cross the 4000m mark which is a solid achievement. Other villages on the way through to South Annapurna Base Camp include Bamboo (2335m), Himalaya (2920m) and Hinku Cave (3100m). The distance from Chomrong to South Annapurna Base Camp and return can be completed comfortably in 3 days.

Returning to the main trail you’ll continue on to Tadapani where you’ll get great views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail). There are some lovely little shops and lodges in Tadapani you’ll enjoy spending a night here. Our photo below shows the splendour of Machhapuchhre. Machhapuchhre is a sacred mountain (sacred to the god Shiva) and is not permitted to be climbed.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek continues through Ghorepani and from here you’ll enjoy the steady climb to the top of Poon Hill at 3210m. Poon Hill is one of the most famous viewing points in all of Nepal (perhaps the world) and it provides stunning views of the Annapurna Range. The view from Poon Hill is for many the highlight of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.

An Annapurna Sanctuary Trek with us

The adventure continues as you descend further down valley to Tirkhedhunga at 1540m. You’ll quickly notice the lower you get the warmer it becomes. In March, April and May the rhododendrons  and bouganvilleas will be in full bloom and are a highlight for many on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. And yes, those weeds you’ll notice growing everywhere are cannabis plants! The adventure concludes as you trek the next day to Naya Pul (1070m) where you’ll meet your private transport for the easy drive to Pokhara.

Although it’s a relatively short trip, there are heaps of highlights packed into an Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.
