Skiing in Nepal – The Ultimate High-Altitude Adventure

A Rare Blend of Mountaineering and Skiing

Forget lift queues, après bars and chairlifts. Skiing in Nepal is a whole different world – raw, remote and exhilarating beyond words. This isn’t your typical ski holiday; it’s a true expedition. A rare blend of high-altitude mountaineering and backcountry skiing set in one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on Earth.

For more than a decade, we’ve guided adventurous skiers and snowboarders deep into the Hinku Valley to climb and ski Mera Peak – a 6,476-metre Himalayan giant in the Everest region of Nepal. This is the ultimate test of fitness, focus and determination. Every step takes you higher, every breath feels hard-earned, and every turn you carve on the descent feels like a reward few others will ever know.

We’ve been running this expedition for over ten years. As the only Australian company – and one of a very small number globally – to offer such a trip, we’ve refined every detail. With our team of expert guides (most have climbed Mount Everest many times), we bring together decades of Himalayan knowledge and a safety record that speaks for itself.

If you’re looking for something truly different, something that tests you and fills your soul at the same time, skiing in Nepal is it.

Why Skiing in Nepal Belongs on Your Bucket List

There’s a moment on every expedition when it hits you. That sense of perspective that only the high Himalaya can give. You’re standing at over 6,000 metres, surrounded by the world’s highest peaks. The air is thin, your heart is pounding, and Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Kanchenjunga fill the horizon.

You take a deep breath, click into your bindings, and look down at 1,500 metres of untouched snow. This is the moment that defines skiing in Nepal.

This is not luxury travel. There are no hot tubs, heated chalets or buffet breakfasts. What you get instead is authenticity – a sense of accomplishment that can only come from putting one foot (or ski) in front of the other and earning every metre of altitude.

From the bustling chaos of Kathmandu to the quiet majesty of the upper Hinku Valley, every day of this expedition brings something new. You’ll cross roaring rivers on suspension bridges, climb high mountain passes, and trek through ancient Sherpa villages. You’ll share tea with locals, laugh with your porters, and begin to understand why the Himalaya captures hearts in a way no other mountain range can.

The Journey to Mera Peak

Your skiing in Nepal adventure begins long before you reach the snow. After arriving in Kathmandu and taking a spectacular flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region, the expedition begins on foot. For the first five days, you’ll begin a steady acclimatisation process trekking along the famous Everest Base Camp trail to Namche Bazaar then back to Lukla.

After this, our route leaves the Khumbu and heads to the more remote and Hinku Valley. We travel through dense forests, glacial valleys and high ridgelines that reveal ever-growing views of the Himalaya.

We take our time to acclimatise properly, moving higher each day, building strength and resilience along the way. These early days are as much about connection as they are about climbing – connecting with your team, the Sherpas, and the rhythm of life in the mountains.

As you reach Khare, the last settlement before the mountain, excitement starts to build. Above camp lies the Mera Peak Glacier – a stunning expanse of ice and snow that leads all the way to the summit. From here, we don crampons and harnesses and begin three unforgettable days on snow and ice. Our skiing in Nepal expedition now takes on new meaning.

High Camp sits at around 5,800 metres. The air is thin, the views endless. The following morning, with headlamps piercing the darkness, you’ll begin your summit push. It’s steady, deliberate, and breathtaking in every sense. Six or seven hours later, you’ll reach the top – standing higher than almost every mountain in Europe, Africa and the Americas.

And then comes the magic: the ski descent of a lifetime.

The Descent of Dreams

From the summit of Mera Peak, you’ll drop into a 1,500-metre vertical descent with the most extraordinary view imaginable. To your far left, Cho Oyu (the world’s 6th highest mountain) glistens in the morning sun. Directly in front of you, Mount Everest (the highest mountain in the world) and Lhotse (4th highest) stand in all their glory. To your right, Makalu (5th highest) and Kanchenjunga (3rd highest) cut through the skyline. Below, the valley stretches into infinity.

This is skiing at its purest. No crowds, no lifts, no noise – just the hiss of your skis and the vast silence of the high Himalaya. Few people on Earth have ever experienced this. Even fewer will again.

The snow is often surprisingly good – dry, compact, and forgiving. Every turn feels like an act of freedom, every glance around reminds you that you’re doing something truly extraordinary.

Back at the Mera La, the team gathers for high-fives, hugs and photos that can never quite capture what it felt like. You’ve just skied from the summit of a 6,000+ metre Himalayan peak. You’ve earned every moment of it.

The Sherpa Connection

No skiing in Nepal story is complete without mentioning the Sherpa people. Their laughter, humility and resilience define this expedition. From carrying loads to setting ropes, cooking meals and sharing stories by the stove, the Sherpas embody the spirit of the Himalaya.

Our relationship with our Nepali team goes back decades. Many of our Sherpas have become lifelong friends, and they are a huge part of what makes this trip so meaningful.

You’ll quickly realise that their energy and humour are the heartbeat of the journey. They remind you that even when the going gets tough, joy can be found in the smallest moments – a shared joke, a cup of tea, a sunrise over Mount Everest.

More Than Just a Ski Expedition

Skiing in Nepal changes you. It strips away the unnecessary and leaves you with the essentials – clarity, connection and perspective. It’s a reminder that life’s richest experiences often come from embracing discomfort, not avoiding it.

When you return to Kathmandu – usually by an exhilarating helicopter flight from Kote – it feels surreal. You’ve gone from the stillness of the Himalaya to the hum of city life in a matter of hours. But something inside you has shifted. You’ve seen what few others have seen. You’ve done something most wouldn’t dare attempt.

You’ve earned a story that will stay with you forever.
